A Return to the Room

By Kerwin Holmes, Jr.

Priorities must be set, and limits taken, but in due time, the crop will come forth and you will be able to eat freely.

So, it has been a while since I have made a post on this website. Granted, my last post was made with a sense of moral compulsion. A friend of mine reminded me of how much I despised persons mishandling information and broad-brushing entire communities of persons under stereotypical monikers. I could not sit back silently while whole nation’s worth of media did so to a Virginian town that I had briefly enjoyed in my younger years. I am still thankful for that friend’s prodding those two years ago.

If you need a recapitulation for how much I hate mishandling information, read more here and here for some examples.

But, that post was a good post. I had a good bit to say about the events that happened in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017, and writing that post was useful and perhaps a temporary culmination to what I have been warning about. If you want to read more about that, just use the search engine at the top right of this page and search “racism” or a like term and see what pops up.

I have to admit that a lot of stuff has occurred since I last took my break. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. I mean, the last time that I posted, we were still collectively sighing (maybe) over the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series the same year that we got a new President in Donald Trump…well scratch that last one. Some people are still weeping over that and such. I’m not interested in going into that right now.

And no, I will not be doing a recapitulation. It’s just too much (craziness), and I imagine that many of you have had time to go outside and experience life well enough to not need such a thing.

I tried and try to write things that last past their expiration date, posts that move toward a theme of life with longevity that will still be relevant further down the road. So far, I see (with great relief, to be frank) that I have accomplished that in some ways. A lot of the things that I warned about are transpiring now. The signs were present, and the signals were going out (like with this post).

For instance: we are now (finally) having fundamental battles over abortion like at no other time since the Supreme Court erroneously overstepped its mandate in the Roe v. Wade decision (similarly to how they did with Dred Scott v Sanford and Plessy v. Ferguson, all three cases of which dealt with humans deciding the fundamental value of other humans and countrymen deciding how human other countrymen are on the divine level of judgment). The satirical post that I made on abortion actually came to my mind in November 2016, but I only had time to write it (briefly) later in the following year. It marinated in my mind and heart for a long while. Such has been life for me. And this is just one instance of how writing with longevity has served me well.

And that brings me to the conclusion of this update: what I have been up to. Well, in short, I’ve been grinding on upgrades. Like I said before, I do a lot of stuff outside of this forum. Life goes on, and I have done a great deal of things and acquired new skills that still fill me with wonder whenever I exercise them. Now I hope to hone these skills as I continue to acquire more knowledge.

Vague? Yes, and purposefully so. I won’t put so much of my business on here. And, hopefully, I will never have to do so. But, hey, with this return, hopefully you can look forward to more stuff dropping periodically, even as my life becomes a bit more filled with responsibilities and time constraints.

But, you know, that’s part of it all– this growing adventure to Mt. Doom and back again (if we serve the right King), the journey that we call life…that leg of it that we fortunate ones call the present mortality. We only have so much time, and so much of that time fits within the season for preparations and planting. But, it’s as the old adage that has been proven: with the time constraints comes the time for planting, which yields to the time of harvest, and then soon, sooner enough than you may realize as you work, you too will be able to feast upon your harvest in those spaces that are still in time, but feel igualmente as if “in-between” time.

You know them: the moments when you hold your family close to you while wondering how one singular moment of marriage has wrought you so great a godly gift, or when you hold your first baseball after being selected by your talents to join the team, or when you nail your first A grade on an assignment that you worked hard for…or even when you see these things in someone else whom you have supported through thick and thin.

Yes, it is time to start writing again (perhaps sooner, perhaps later). But the break has been well-needed and well-spent.

Let us hope with adventure that the return will be well worth it.

Welcome to the Reasoner’s Corner.
